Unfortunately, for 13-year-old Puja and 9-year-old Sarita, school is simply not an option due to time-consuming chores like walking 5-7 hours to collect water.
However, with your support, Puja and Sarita’s family will receive a rainwater harvesting tank which will provide clean water for 9 months. Afterwards, the tank can be refilled from pond water. Puja and Sarita will also receive bicycles, school supplies and tuition.
As a result, Puja and Sarita will be able to attend school full time instead of just studying solely at home and going to school for only a few hours. In addition, Puja and Sarita’s family will learn how to plant a garden using Khadin cultivation — a 500-year-old method that uses run-off water for agriculture This will provide their family with more nutritious food and higher incomes.
A taanka (rainwater harvesting tank) with built in bio-sand water filter will be built for Puja and Sarita’s family. The taanka will capture water during the summer monsoon and can also be refilled from pond water. This will enable Puja and Sarita to attend school rather than walk long distances to collect water.
Puja and Sarita will receive a bicycle, schools supplies and tuition to attend school.
Puja and Sarita’s family will receive training to setup a garden using Khadin* cultivation. By using Khadin cultivation, Puja and Sarita’s family will be able to grow green vegetables and desert fruits including lemon and pomegranate. As a result, they will be able to consume more nutritious food and sell their surplus.
*The Khadin method is a 500 year-old practice that involves building a slope and using run-off rain water for agriculture. A bund at the base retains water for agriculture. This is one of the most effective and sustainable methods for promoting crop growth in water scarce regions.
