Rajani, who is 14 years old, lives with her parents and sister Nirma who is 7 years old.
Rajani begins her day at 5:00 am and then walks several hours to collect water for her family. Afterwards she helps her mother to milk their cows and tend to their crops.
Rajani enjoys studying immensely — her favorite subject is Hindi — and only goes to school after completing her chores. Nirma is worried that she too will not be able to attend school fully like her sister.
Now thanks to the support of Rohit Bhapkar and the Richa and Atul Aggarwal Foundation, their family will soon receive a water harvesting tank which will enable Rajani and Nirma to attend school full-time. In addition, their family will have clean water, nutritious food and additional income.
OneProsper International will build a rainwater harvesting tank with biosand filter for Rajani and Nirma’s family. The tank will capture water during the summer monsoon and can be refilled from pond water. This will enable Rajani and Nirma to attend school rather than walk long distances to collect water.
Rajani and Nirma will each receive a bicycle, schools supplies and tuition to attend school.
Rajani and Nirma’s family will receive training to setup a garden using Khadin cultivation. *
* A Khadin is an earthen bund that contains rainwater within an agricultural area. A khadin is one of the most effective and sustainable methods for promoting crop growth in water-scarce regions.
