Shanti

Like many other girls in the Thar Desert, Shanti wakes up at 5:00 am to help her mother collect water and feed their livestock. This 13-year-old girl would love to attend school and aspires to be a nurse and work in a hospital close to her village. Gomati Devi, Shanti’s mother, is fully supportive of Shanti’s desire to study but she is unable to collect water for the family by herself. As a result, Shanti studies at home and only attends school a few days each month after completing her chores.

A rainwater harvesting tank will capture water during the summer monsoon and can be refilled with pond water. This will enable Shanti to attend school rather than walking long distances to collect water.
