Veena is 10 years old. She lives in Kushlawa village with her parents and siblings – Kiran 8 years-old, Anita 7 years-old and Usha 5 years-old.
Despite her young age, Veena is a big help to her mother. She wakes at 5:00 am and then helps her mother to collect water for their family. After collecting water, Veena helps to feed their goats and cows.
Phooli, Veena’s mother, works 12 hours per day as a laborer. Phooli is very stressed about their day-to-day lives because her husband has not found work in several months.
Veena likes to study and goes to school for a couple of hours after she has finished her housework. She also studies at home. Veena would like to go to college and become a nurse or Hindi teacher.
Thanks to the generous support our donors Rajesh & Rachna Jain, Alex Moore and Richa & Atul Aggarwal Foundation, Veena will soon be able to realize her dreams.
Veena’s family will soon have their own rainwater harvesting tank with biosand filter. This will enable Veena to attend school rather than collect water. In addition, Veen will receive a bicycle, school supplies and tuition for attending school. Moreover, Veena’s family will recieve training to setup a garden using the khadin method which uses rainwater for agriculture.
Now Veena and her siblings will be able to pursue their dreams rather than walking long distances to collect water.
OneProsper International will build a rainwater harvesting tank with biosand filter for Veena’s family. The tank will capture water during the summer monsoon and can be refilled from pond water. This will enable Veena to attend school rather than walk long distances to collect water.
Veena will receive a bicycle, schools supplies and tuition to attend school.
Veena’s family will receive training to setup a garden using Khadin cultivation. *
* A Khadin is an earthen bund that contains rainwater within an agricultural area. A khadin is one of the most effective and sustainable methods for promoting crop growth in water-scarce regions.
