Drip Irrigation Completion Report

Jun 23, 2011   //   by Raju Agarwal   //   Updates  //  No Comments

The Challenge
In India, 100 million small farmers (500 million people, including families) are trapped in a cycle of low
productivity, incomes and nutrition. Water scarcity is the key challenge to improving the productivity of
small farmers in India.

The Innovation
IDE‐India, a grantee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has developed innovative drip irrigation
kits specifically for the needs of small farmers.

Drip Irrigation Project
In January 2011, OneProsper International, in partnership with Bala Vikasa Social Service Society,
initiated a pilot drip irrigation project. Three villages in the Warangal district in South India were
selected because of their semi‐arid climate and proximity to Bala Vikasa’s training center. Twenty small
farmer beneficiaries from two disadvantaged groups received drip irrigation kits and training in the
effective use of drip irrigation. Each farmer contributed 25% of the cost of a one acre drip kit with the
balance subsidized by OneProsper. The crops under cultivation include tomato, chilli, lady finger, bottle
gourd and cauliflower.

Results
Crop growth under drip irrigation was “faster and healthier”. Farmers increased their incomes by an
average of 116% from previous years while using 30% less water. As a result, beneficiaries are able to
improve family nutrition and increase spending on their children’s education.
