Before After

Pramila, age 45, is a small farmer growing corn on her 2 acre field in the village of Ganga Devipalli, Andhra Pradesh, India. The water level in her well has been declining as her village is in a drought prone area. With limited water for growing her crops, Pramila is trapped in a cycle of low crop yields and incomes. She has accumulated debts of $500 from local money lenders.

After installing drip irrigation, Pramila was able to increase the area under cultivation by 100% and grow a second crop during the year. She also spends 50% less on fertilizer as a result of switching to water soluble fertilizer. As a result, Pramila has increased her income by 88% within one harvest.Pramila plans to use the additional income to pay off her debts and to invest in a cow or buffalo.

Inspired by Pramila’s success, many other small farmers in her village are planning to install drip irrigation on their fields next spring.“Despite the low water level in my well… with drip irrigation, I was easily able to grow a profitable second crop!”.
